When Khazanah, Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, launched a bid for control of Singapore’s Parkway Holdings healthcare group earlier this year, it triggered a cross-border takeover battle involving companies in three Asian countries.

The tussle demonstrates the high value attached by the rival bidders to Parkway’s extensive hospital network, which the bidders hoped to use to create a leading Asian healthcare provider – and capitalise on the region’s fast-growing medical tourism industry. Source

Hotels see bounce-back in room occupancies, rates

After dismal years in 2008-09, the country’s hotel industry could be in for happier times, going by the optimism displayed by the country’s largest hotel company, The Indian Hotels Company Ltd. According to Mr Ajoy K Misra, Sr Vice-President, sales and marketing, in the first quarter of this fiscal occupancies on an average in its hotels have gone up by 10 percentage points. As this month and next are the off season, he expects room rates also to go up come September. Source

Hotel industry adds cheer amid Games gloom

Some of the basic infrastructure projects being readied for the 2010 Commonwealth Games might be floundering, but there is one industry that is looking up. In the run up to the games, Delhi and the National Capital Region (Gurgaon, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad) would get eight five-star hotels and 30 two, three and four-star (budget) hotels.

Together, they will add 12,300 new hotel rooms. Of these, in the last one year, two five star deluxe hotels, Leela Kempinski, Gurgaon and Aman, New Delhi and three five-star hotels, Carlson Group’s Country Inns and Suites in Sahibabad, Crowne Plaza Today, Okhla and The Galaxy Hotel, Gurgaon have already become operational. A section of the Leela Hotel coming up in Delhi would be ready in time for the games. Source

Growth of tourism in India expected to intensify competition amongst travel agencies

The Oberoi Vanyavilas, Ranthambore, has been ranked the best hotel in the world. The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra, Rajvilas Jaipur and Udaivilas Udaipur have been ranked second, third and fourth respectively in Asia and positioned number five, 13 and 15 (in the same order) in world ranking, according to a readers’ poll by ‘Travel+Leisure’ magazine.

Interestingly, the group’s domestic expansion plans include opening Oberoi Gurgaon by Dec 2010/early January 2011. In a letter addressed to the group’s chairman PRS Oberoi, Union tourism minister Kumari Selja said the award is the “crowning glory” of Incredible India.
